本書為英國作家狄更斯第貳部作品，一八三八年由理察本特利（Richard Bentley）出版。故事描寫孤苦無依的奧利佛，自幼於救濟院長大，因為受不了飢餓想多要些稀飯，卻遭到無情毒打，並淪落於倫敦低層社會掙扎求生的故事。狄更斯以其寫實手法，如實刻劃倫敦孤兒的悲慘生活。當中對於救濟院的生活、社會童工以及幫派吸收青少年參與犯罪等問題躍然紙上，並以諷刺與黑色幽默等口吻，試圖喚醒人們對於此類社會問題的重視。

As he tries to free himself from their clutches he becomes immersed in the seedy underbelly of the Capital, amongst criminals, prostitutes and the homeless. Dickens scathing attack on the cruelness of Victorian Society features some of his most memorable and enduring characters, including innocent Oliver himself, the Artful Dodger, Fagin, Bill Sikes and Nancy.

Charles Dickens was born in 1812 and grew up in poverty. This experience influenced 'Oliver Twist', the second of his fourteen major novels, which first appeared in 1837. When he died in 1870, he was buried in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey as an indication of his huge popularity as a novelist, which endures to this day.
