No one is better equipped in the struggle for wealth and worldly success than the alluring and ruthless Becky Sharp, who defies her impoverished background to clamber up the class ladder. Her sentimental companion Amelia, however, longs only for the caddish soldier George. As the two heroines make their way through the tawdry glamour of Regency society, battles - military and domestic - are fought, fortunes made and lost. The one steadfast and honourable figure in this corrupt world is Dobbin, devoted to Amelia, bringing pathos and depth to Thackeray's gloriously satirical epic of love and social adventure.

This edition follows the text of Thackeray's revised edition of 1853. John Carey's introduction identifies Vanity Fair as a landmark in the development of European Realism, and as a reflection of Thackeray's passionate love for another man's wife.

威廉．梅克比斯．薩克萊／William Makepeace Thackeray（1811/07/18-1863/12/24）

英國維多利亞時代知名小說家威廉．梅克比斯．薩克萊，其文采與狄更斯齊名。生於印度加爾各答（Calcutta）的薩克萊，其父為不列顛東印度公司員工李奇蒙．薩克萊（Richmond Thackeray），母親為安妮．貝契爾（Anne Becher）。自小受接正統紳士教育的薩克萊，然而卻於就讀劍橋大學三一學院（Trinity College, Cambridge）時期，一連串的投資失誤以至於敗光父親的遺產。

1843年薩克萊發表了《愛爾蘭小品集》（The Irish Sketch Book），三年後於'46年發表《庸人之書》（The Book of Snobs），但是直到'48年發表了《浮華世界》，薩克萊的寫作才能才受到普羅大眾的肯定，並與狄更斯並駕齊驅。1863年12月24日，薩克萊於撰寫《丹尼斯．杜瓦爾》（Denis Duval）時去世，享年五十二歲。死後葬於倫敦萬靈公墓（另譯肯薩爾綠野公墓，Kensal Green Cemetery）。遺作《丹尼斯．杜瓦爾》於1864年發刊。

William Makepeace Thackeray was born and educated to be a gentleman, but gambled away much of his fortune while at Cambridge. He trained as a lawyer before turning to journalism. He was a regular contributor to periodicals and magazines and Vanity Fair was serialised in Punch in 1847-8.
