When Adam Cauliff's new cabin cruiser, Cornelia II, blows up in New York harbor with him and several close business associates aboard, his wife, Nell MacDermott, is not only distraught at the loss but wracked with guilt because she and Adam had just had a serious quarrel and she had told him not to come home.

The quarrel was precipitated by Nell's decision to try to win the congressional seat long held by her grandfather Cornelius MacDermott. Orphaned at age ten, she had been raised by "Mac," as she called him, and was always at his side on Capitol Hill. Politics was in her blood, and Adam had known her ambitions when they married. Suddenly, however, he became opposed to her plan to run for Congress.

Nell, like her great-aunt Gert, possesses psychic gifts, which her grandfather scoffingly dismisses as "flights of fantasy." As the investigation into the boat's explosion proceeds, Nell is shocked by the official confirmation that it was not an accident but the result of foul play. 美國知名愛爾蘭裔懸疑小說家瑪莉．海金斯．克拉克，生於紐約布朗克斯（Bronx）。早期撰寫電台廣播劇，後因時代變遷報章雜誌轉而刊載女性自助、啟發性專欄。在經紀人建議下，克拉克轉而投身創作長篇小說，並自一九五六年起陸續發表作品，在早期廣播劇的時間限制訓練下，養成克拉克行文簡潔幹練風格。截至二○一五年，生涯發表之五十一部作品，多數仍持續販售中，而其成名作《我的孩子在哪裡》（Where Are the Children?）至今已發行高達七十五刷之譜。其作品光美國當地即銷售破億本。克拉克曾獲美國推理作家協會最高榮譽——愛倫坡獎之「大師賞」，文壇譽為「懸疑小說天后」。為了表彰其卓越貢獻，愛倫坡獎更於二○○一年新增克拉克獎（Mary Higgins Clark Award），鼓勵以堅毅女性為主角之類型創作。克拉克筆下知名作品計有《後會誰說無期》、《消逝中的女人》、《多重殺機》、《前世恨未了》以及《弗農山愛情故事》等。克拉克於二○二○年一月卅一日病逝，享壽九十二歲。

Each of her 51 books was a bestseller in the United States and various European countries, and all of her novels remained in print as of 2015, with her debut suspense novel, Where Are the Children?, in its seventy-fifth printing.
