選錄英美文學教授朗.高爾筆下詩集,當中論及美國陸軍駐密蘇里州倫納德伍德堡,與科羅拉多州科林斯堡,以及高爾對於美國軍旅生活的種種反思。
What Ron Gower brings to us in Part One of Single Men in Barracks is a vivid photograph in language and lyric of the draft day barracks, where young men suffered "the shock of Separation" to prepare for a silly war, when young men were "private as public property." I might have slept in the bunk beside him, only in Fort Leonard Wood rather than Fort Collins, "naked as an onion" and "grunting on", enduring the humility and degradation of the Army training way. Even a "Weekend Pass" can't save the "herd" when they "drink to find themselves, but only become more lost." The irony is explicit: Gower's lyrical voice and perceptive eye recalling a place where individuality counts least.
Part Two, The River and Beyond, focuses upon what might be forgotten or lost, those "Touchstones," those stitchings that make a life or haunt it, in Gower's demand for detail and a language that refreshes. You may find yourself here or there, in Araby or Ketchum, on a riverbank fishing salmon, a ski slope, and always with the fish and the birds, "the first things I remembered when I died." I see Gower fishing trout or steelhead with Richard Hugo, who shares his passion for the world. "You own the death of every bird you name."
Here is the measure of a life, an inventory of exactness and metaphor, music and scene, those things we love best that we leave behind. "Such a relief to die, knowing we got away with it."
—Edward Micus, award-winning author of Landing Zones
And The Infirmary, and a Vietnam War Veteran.
