This book is based on the works of Beatrix Potter, who is regarded as one of the best-loved children's authors of all time. 彼得兔由英國女作家暨插畫家碧翠絲．波特（Helen Beatrix Potter）所創，首見於一九○二年出版之童書《比得兔的故事》（The Tale of Peter Rabbit）。之後波特又陸續出版五本彼得兔相關的童書。彼得兔名字得自於碧翠絲年幼時所飼養的一隻兔子，而故事原型，則是源自於一八九三年，波特小姐寫給前家庭教師那五歲兒子諾耶爾．摩爾（Noel Moore）的信件，因其長年臥病在床，因此波特以小故事娛樂並鼓勵這位小男孩。

一九○二年六月，彼得兔首則故事《比得兔的故事》（The Tale of Peter Rabbit）由英國費德里克．沃恩公司出版。當年初版首刷僅刊行兩萬八千本，然而截至二○○八年，該書全球銷量已突破四千萬本大關。同時，全系列則已經銷售高達一億五千一百萬本，並被翻譯多達三十餘種語言版本。
