Hidden away in the Record Department of the sprawling Ministry of Truth, Winston Smith skilfully rewrites the past to suit the needs of the Party. 喬治．歐威爾本名艾利克．亞瑟．布萊爾（Eric Arthur Blair），為英國左翼作家、新聞記者與社會評論家。作品以尖銳批評、諷刺見長。《動物農莊》和《一九八四》為歐威爾傳世經典，他在書中以辛辣的筆觸諷刺泯滅人性的極權主義社會和當權者，然而其對社會集權與大權獨攬的預言卻不幸在成書後不斷重複印證。兩部作品堪稱世界文壇政治諷喻小說的經典之作，其影響早已超乎文學層面。此外歐氏於小說中所創造的詞彙，諸如「老大哥」、「新話」、「雙重思想」等用語，如今皆已收入英語詞典；而由他的名字衍生出的「歐威爾主義」、「歐威爾式的」等新詞，甚至成為日常通用語彙。

Eric Arthur Blair (1903-1950), better known by his pen-name, George Orwell, was born in India, where his father worked for the Civil Service. An author and journalist, Orwell was one of the most prominent and influential figures in twentieth-century literature. His unique political allegory Animal Farm was published in 1945, and it was this novel, together with the dystopia of Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), which brought him world-wide fame. His novels and non-fiction include Burmese Days, Down and Out in Paris and London, The Road to Wigan Pier and Homage to Catalonia.
